Hockensmith Family Studio Portraits

Jason and I remember meeting baby Layla for the first time at Artemis and Seth’s wedding last October in Tyson’s Corner.  I distinctly recall having to forcibly pull myself away from Layla from fear that I was taking too many pictures of her.  But…, I mean look at her.  Cute!! You just want to eat her up.  We were so thrilled to hear from the Hockensmith family.  We had actually scheduled a studio session in late December, but it was the weekend of the great snow.  The awesome two footer that had us trapped inside our home for 4 days.  Last week we all got together and had a little fun in house.  Mr. and Mrs. Hockensmith, if you ever need a babysitter, just call me.

Prairie Family Portraits: Part Deux

Here are more fun pics in the park of John, Nicole, Bangkok and Bijan!  These images were shot by Jason with his new Canon EOS 1V, utilizing Fuji Superia X-TRA 800 film.

Be sure to check back as we are shooting Sam and Ahna’s wedding on December 12th.  We will be using 35mm film for most of the day.  Thanks for stopping by!

Prairie Family Portraits

You may have remembered Jon and Lori’s beautiful Korean wedding that we photographed last year in May.  Through Jon and Lori we met John and Nicole.  Nicole was  one of Lori’s bridesmaids.  Jason and I got to spend the weekend with the four of them, along with John and Nicole’s doggies, Bangkok and Bijan.  Bangkok is an adorable white Shih tzu, and Bijan is a Brussels Griffon (I want to get one so bad… Jason says maybe…).  We took their family portraits at a park in Georgetown on a lovely fall morning.  Keep a look out for more pics of them coming up in March when they come to visit Charlottesville for springtime portraits!

Henry’s Doljanchi – Woo Lae Oak – Tyson’s Corner, VA

320_090425hw_358a

A couple of weekends ago, I got to experience a doljanchi, or dol, which is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a one-year-old baby.   This was Henry’s dol to be exact.  The son of my wonderful accountants, Tucker and Taylor Waldruff.   This celebration was by far the greatest birthday party for a baby that I have ever seen.   Tucked away on the second floor banquet hall of  the Woo Lae Oak in Tyson’s Corner, several guests were seated at brightly colored tables with balloons and chopstick settings.  The party started off with a few words of gratitude from the parents to their guests, followed by a cute slideshow displayed on a large projection screen.

The highlight of the party was an interesting event called the Doljabi.  Henry was placed on one end of a bamboo mat, while certain objects were placed in a straight line at the other end.  Henry was then urged to crawl over and pick up an object, and this would symbolize his future.  Some of these objects included a roll of money, which symbolized wealth.  If he picked up rice, that would mean that he would never go through life hungry.  An American flag symbolized politics.  A baseball mitt and ball meant that he would be an athelete.   Henry got two turns… can you guess what he picked?? 😀  Henry picked up the money roll and the bowl of rice to his parent’s delight.  Henry’s future is looking bright!

The party also included music, dancing dragons, a ginormous birthday cake and delicious food.  When I hopped into the buffet line, I had no idea that there were so many kimchee varieties.  I actually went back for thirds because of the bulgogi (shame on me for being such a pig)!

CYFS Benefit at MMA Institute Charlottesville

320_090221mma_008a

CYFS, or Children Youth Family Services is a private, non profit agency that is all about the kids.  They have been serving the area for over 87 years providing programs for over 3,500 children from low income or at risk families.  These programs work to create healthier environments at home, in child care, school, and the community by addressing issues of poverty, child abuse and neglect, child care quality, and parenting.

On Saturday, February 21st, a benefit hosted by the MMA Institute brought together a generous body of volunteers and businesses to help raise awareness, funding, and fun for the kids.   Many of the volunteers included the Albemarle County police and fire rescue, H & H Security, Tumblebus, Dominoes Pizza, Gold’s Gym and members of the MMA Institute.

The Powell Family – Staunton, VA

Jason and I spent an entire Sunday with Jeff, Melanie and Cameron at their home in Waynesboro.  Their dog Bailey joined in the fun as well!  Much of the focus was on Jeff and Melanie’s adorable son Cameron, whom they’ve adopted from Guatemala.  Cameron took an instant liking to Jason, pelting him with his favorite stuffed animals and toys!  I think the cutest moment was after our shoot when we all went out to dinner.  Cameron was so exhausted from all the day’s excitement that he could barely stay awake while eating.  We kept thinking that he was just going to pass out, but he ate his entire meal!

I also want to mention that Jeff is a phenomenal DJ.  He spins with another great friend of ours, DJ Ducktape.  Together they are the Duck Brothers, and I highly suggest you catch them when they are performing around town.
