Jonathan and Rachel’s Engagement – UVA/Oakencroft Vineyard – Charlottesville, VA

320_090521JR_168A

Jonathan and Rachel hung out with me and Jason late last week around the UVA gardens.  We were in hopes of finding some beautiful flowers to incorporate into their engagement photos.   We must have missed the window of the spring blooms however, because everything was green and there wasn’t a flower in sight.  No worries.  The greenery in this town is just so remarkable, and walking through the gardens in the late afternoon was so invigorating.  After leaving the gardens we all ventured over to the Oakencroft Winery in Charlottesville for more shots of our town’s magical landscapes.

Igor and Sanja’s Engagement – Belmont – Charlottesville, VA

320_090509IS_007A

Jason and I spent a lovely late afternoon with this gorgeous couple in the quaint area of Belmont and a yummy evening at  Mas.  We are looking forward to their wedding in late August, which will be celebrated at the Omni.  Many of their family and guests will be traveling from Croatia, Germany and other places abroad.   I look forward to the diversity, culture and esoteric food!

Niko and Helen’s Wedding – St. Paul/Colonnade Club – Charlottesville, VA

320_090509NH_0941A

The weather forecast had threatened to rain down on Niko and Helen’s wedding all week long.  There was a little sprinkle on the day of the their rehearsal, but blue skies prevailed on Saturday, May 9th.  It was the first time that Jason and I have shot at St. Paul’s Memorial Church and the Colonnade Club at UVA.  Rae was shooting along side with us (Rae, you rock!).  I loved the natural and brightly lit interiors of both St. Paul’s and the Colonnade Club.  These two settings really enhanced the  relaxed atmosphere that Niko and Helen envisioned for their wedding day.   A. Pimento Catering did such a splendid job of creating an elegant atmosphere for the reception, and it was so cool to work with Brad Savage, the radio host for 106.1 The Corner.  We have worked with him as an emcee on numerous occasions in the past, but this was the first time as an event DJ.

What a wonderful gift it was to spend the weekend with Niko, Helen their friends and family.  So compassionate and comforting to be around.  The guests came from far and wide, including Michigan, California, Germany and Japan.   I really fell in love with Helen’s mom.  We sat across from each other at the rehearsal dinner on Friday and had the most wonderful conversations about everything from growing up in Charlottesville to working in the radio and news industry.  I am so fond of  people and their stories.    Helen and Niko will have a wonderful story to tell their children one day about their wedding celebration.

Henry’s Doljanchi – Woo Lae Oak – Tyson’s Corner, VA

320_090425hw_358a

A couple of weekends ago, I got to experience a doljanchi, or dol, which is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a one-year-old baby.   This was Henry’s dol to be exact.  The son of my wonderful accountants, Tucker and Taylor Waldruff.   This celebration was by far the greatest birthday party for a baby that I have ever seen.   Tucked away on the second floor banquet hall of  the Woo Lae Oak in Tyson’s Corner, several guests were seated at brightly colored tables with balloons and chopstick settings.  The party started off with a few words of gratitude from the parents to their guests, followed by a cute slideshow displayed on a large projection screen.

The highlight of the party was an interesting event called the Doljabi.  Henry was placed on one end of a bamboo mat, while certain objects were placed in a straight line at the other end.  Henry was then urged to crawl over and pick up an object, and this would symbolize his future.  Some of these objects included a roll of money, which symbolized wealth.  If he picked up rice, that would mean that he would never go through life hungry.  An American flag symbolized politics.  A baseball mitt and ball meant that he would be an athelete.   Henry got two turns… can you guess what he picked?? 😀  Henry picked up the money roll and the bowl of rice to his parent’s delight.  Henry’s future is looking bright!

The party also included music, dancing dragons, a ginormous birthday cake and delicious food.  When I hopped into the buffet line, I had no idea that there were so many kimchee varieties.  I actually went back for thirds because of the bulgogi (shame on me for being such a pig)!

Faucet

img_1302

Rest in peace, Friend. April 26, 1996 - May 2, 2009.

It is with a heavy heart that I write today about the loss of our beloved friend and family member, Faucet.   He was struck and instantly killed by a vehicle this past weekend on the highway near our home.  We can only take a small amount of comfort in knowing that he did not suffer.

Faucet lived a great life.  His world consisted of running the woods, pulling weeds for Jay whenever he mowed the lawn, barking at deer, herding in the UPS and Fed Ex trucks up our driveway, snacking on tons of treats, and sleeping in our bed underneath the covers on cold nights.  Even though Faucet was 13 years old, his personality still rang out as a puppy.   He loved to be around people, especially the ladies.   If you have ever met Faucet, you probably realized immediately why his name was Faucet.  My car’s back windows still have the remnants of his drool and nose prints plastered lovingly all over, even after I have tried to clean them…., but now I think that I will leave them there for as long as they want to stay.

Dearest Faucet, you were such an outstanding friend.  We will miss you.
